My name is Nikki Girvan, I’m a freelance journalist and PR student currently based in Liverpool, England.
I started my career as a national journalist five years ago when a certain news editor shrugged and said ‘I don't know if you can write bum on a wall. But you will talk to anyone, so I’ll give you a chance.’
At Mercury Press Agency, Liverpool, I worked as reporter and features editor, sourcing, writing and selling stories to national newspapers and magazines for just over a year before moving down to London to become a writer for the women's real-life weeklies.
Down in the ‘big smoke’ I was a writer for Full House magazine, then later Pick Me Up where I progressed to become Commissioning Editor.
Over four years I learnt a lot, laughed a lot, wrote a lot and ate my bodyweight in cake most Fridays, thanks to the Pick Me Uppers obsession with baked goods.
I was also frequently amazed by the things that go on in this crazy world we live in, and fascinated by how the media was constantly changing.
In November 2008, I was itching for a new challenge, and I returned to my hometown, Liverpool, to start plotting my move into PR.
Currently I’m freelancing, blogging and studying for my CIPR Advanced Certificate in Public Relations.
Some of my hack friends call this ‘going to the dark side’ I call it ‘broadening my horizons.’
